Vintage History
A little history about the building and how it came to be the Vintage House Cafe.....
Dr. Taylor Smith
and Evelyn A. Smith came to Avon in 1933 and rented the Gibbs - Binns house
on Stony Ridge Road, where Dr. Smith began his practice on the first floor.
The family lived upstairs, and Taylor J. Smith was Born in 1934, Charles B.
Smith was born in 1936. The Gibbs - Binns house was later moved to Old Avon
Village. In 1937, the Smiths moved to their new home at 35750 Detroit Road,
where Terrence A. Smith was born in 1940. Quoting from a 1937 printed post
card announcing that the medical office had been moved to 357750 Detroit
Road. "We would like you to come to see us and our new home and office. We
shall be at home to our friends on Sunday afternoon, March the seventh, from
one until six. Dr. and Mrs. Taylor Smith." In 1940, the Smiths purchased 35
acres from Howard and George Lewis and a new medical office was built at
35800 Detroit Road.
After becoming a doctors office the
building had a long line of tenants, including Dr. Luther Watson, Dr. George
Keidel, A Tailors, A Dry Cleaning Service, and Country Heirs Antiques. In
2003 Mr. and Mrs. Walker leased the property from Taylor J. Smith graciously
allowing them to turn his building into a restaurant. They wanted to create
a new type of restaurant where the food was made fresh unlike all the fast
food and chain restaurants. After months of planning and design the Walkers
were ready to start the construction on the building. Due to historical
codes the front of the building had to remain the same but the inside of the
building changed dramatically. When construction was started the building
was not up to proper building codes and had old knob and tube wiring with
radiant heating. After many more months of hard work the structure was
brought properly up to code and had a working kitchen. After the
construction was complete it took another month to complete the decorating
and the hiring. The total process took over a year to complete and the
Vintage House Café
officially opened on April 4th 2004. Now the
Vintage House Café
specializes in serving fresh homemade food and wide variety of freshly baked
cakes, pies and cheesecakes.
